Mrs. Bochenek's 2nd Grade Classroom Handbook
Agendas: Agendas SHOULD come home every evening. It is your child's responsibility to have you read and explain what we have written about the day’s learning. Then please check and initial the agenda each night.
Attendance: A phone call should be made to the school office on days when your child is not going to be attending school. Please contact the office attendance line at 748-3410 to report any late arrival or absences. If your child will be arriving late and needs a lunch, please contact the office at 748-3400 by 9:00.
Birthday Treats: You are welcome to send a birthday snack with your child or deliver a snack to the office. Non sweet treats and non food items are highly welcomed as well.
If your child's birthday falls on a day when we are not in school, (summer, Christmas break, etc.) you are welcome to pick another day or their half birthday to celebrate. Please just let me know so we can make sure to include it in our day.
Book Orders: During the course of the year, I will be sending home
book orders. The book orders are a great way to build a library at home and are typically reasonable in price. They also make for wonderful gifts!
If you wish to order from the Scholastics Book Clubs you may order one of the following ways:
Online Ordering: If you are ordering online you will need to create a one time username and password and then use the one time activation code for our classroom (GK7J). You will find a link to Scholastics Book Clubs on our classroom website under the Parent Tab.
Send Your Order In To School: It’s super simple! Fill out the paper form, send in your order form and money in an envelope to class and I will enter the order for you
Boots/Winter Gear: During the rainy and snowy weather, I encourage you to send your child in boots (with shoes in their backpacks). Our playground is often wet and muddy. Students are not allowed to call home for dry clothes if they choose to play in the water.
Wearing boots outside and then putting on clean, dry shoes after recess, make for a more comfortable child and a much cleaner classroom.
Conferences: Formal parent/teacher conferences may be scheduled two times this year. The conferences that take place in November are for everyone. Conferences in March are typically for invited students only. At any point, I am happy to hold an informal conference by appointment.
Daily School Schedule: . The first bell will ring at 8:35 and class will start when the second bell rings at 8:40. If your child arrives after the second bell, they are considered tardy. Please make sure your child arrives on time each day.
Dismissal: Please send a written note IN YOUR CHILD’S AGENDA or attached to your child’s agenda, if your son’s/daughter’s usual routine changes. If I do not have a note, they will resume their normal schedule. If you pick your child up after school, please wait in the main entrance or outside of the school building.
Homework: NO MORE THAN 10 MINUTES A NIGHT! If homework is requiring more time than this to complete please communicate with me so homework can be modified for your child.
I feel that homework serves three purposes. First, it helps to develop responsibility. Next, it serves to reinforce skills learned in class. Lastly, it increases parent awareness of what is happening in the classroom.
Homework Packet: On Mondays a “Homework Packet” for the week will be sent home. This homework packet will be due the following Monday. It’s your child’s responsibility to return the work, but gentle reminders from you are always helpful. Your help in checking over the homework is very helpful and beneficial. Thank you in advance for your positive home support
Just Right Library (JRL): We will begin JRL in early October. Your child will sign out a book daily and they need to read it and return it to school the next day. If your child has selected a longer book or chapter book, it is not necessary to finish it all in one night. Please return the bag each day even if not finished.
Label: EVERYTHING!! Please remember to label all clothing, backpacks, lunch boxes, etc... Things sometimes get misplaced, and they are much easier to find if your child’s name is on his/her belongings.
Lunch: Please help your child to decide his/her lunch choice before coming to school. They will order their lunch as they enter the classroom in the morning. Lunch money should be brought to school in a school lunch envelope provided by the school.
Newsletters: You will receive a classroom newsletter every at the beginning of month. Newsletters will contain information on what's happening in class, upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, and special projects.
Snacks: While we will not be having snack in class, many children benefit from having a brain boosting mid-morning /recess snack. If your child plans to take a recess snack, please make sure to send a nutritious snack that will “stick with” your child until lunch.
Supplies & Donations:
*Occasionally during the year needs will arise and I may ask for donations from you. We will usually put a notice in the newsletter asking for needed classroom supplies.
Water Bottle: Your child is welcome to bring in a water bottle to drink from throughout the day. I recommend that your child take his/her water bottle home every Friday so it may be cleaned.
Questions: You are welcome to contact me at anytime to discuss your child or other concerns/questions you are having. My Voice Mail number is ( 748-4777 ext 3215) & Email (lbochene@zps.org)
I usually check my voicemail and email at the beginning of the day and at the day’s end. If you are unable to reach us during the day in the classroom, and it is an emergency, please call the office, 748-3400.
Volunteers: Please register with on our Volunteer site each school year. This system is set in place to keep our kids safe. Thank you in advance for understanding that we care about your child’s well being!

Field Trips: Throughout the school year, we will be going on various field trips. When we go on a field trip, I will give you plenty of notice and ask for volunteers to chaperone.
